I have found two applications using the same software for compressing png's. One is shareware...."pngoutwin" the other is freeware "irfanview" the plug-in in irfanview is done by the same creator of "pngoutwin". The shareware by default has more settings and options, but the irfanview plug-in does an acceptable job.I reduced my "files" folder from 29mb to 18mb.Needless to say it reduces some files better than others. Some saw a savings of almost 50% or more. |

I have Infanview and hadn't thought about using it to compress the png's so just tried it and I'm not sure what if anything I did wrong but there was no change in size. I'm sure it has something to do with the settings on the plug-in....perhaps you could recommend the correct settings?
Thank you, Donnita |

D.H.E. creates PNG using: - 32 bit if the PNG32 support is enabled; - 24 bit if the shape/image is not transparent; - 8 bit (256 colors) if the shape is transparent but the PNG32 support is disabled;
In this method every created image has the best quality possible.
As I know there is only one way to optimize the PNG output because it has NO variable compression rate:
- Reduce the colors used in the image by creating a table of colors and discard the last used in an optimized way.
I've not used this method because it needs a lot of machine calculation time and probably it will be to heavy to use ;-)

To learn more about the aforementioned application and .png's I would suggest this site http://www.ardfry.com/ In Irfanview open up any image and if has not been optimized by any program save it as a .png. A dialogue will come up on the right side of the screen for .png settings.Check "Use PNGOUT plugin".Then click the options button for optional settings. I would advise reading the site info I related to before you start messing with the default settings and also using some pics you don't have to worry about if you make a mistake. I have found no problems using the default settings or changing any options. As Davide said "I've not used this method because it needs a lot of machine calculation time and probably it will be to heavy to use"...it does get intense if you try to batch process and other applications can't be run at the same time. I use a 2.7GB processor and it takes almost all of it and about 20 minutes to do my complete "files" folder. |

Thank you for your interest in PNGOUT.
One of the advantages of the Windows version of PNGOUT is that it reduces the priority of the compression threads when minimized. This allows you to start a big batch of images and do other things while the batch runs. If PNGOUTWin is minimized to the taskbar, then a balloon is shown when the batch is complete.
Also, we made improvements in both the speed of the compression engine and in the amount of compression in general over what is in IrfanView. If you are paying for bandwidth, then it may make business sense to consider PNGOUTWin: the software will pay for itself.
One more note is that PNGOUT is completely lossless: unlike some other applications, we never dither an image in order to improve the compression. PNG uses DEFLATE, the same compression method as zip. There is more than one way to compress a file in this format. PNGOUT searches for the best way to compress the file in this format. |
