I have a link to an mp3 file on a website. When I click the link, it plays the file; when I right click on the link, there is no menu item which will allow me to save the file.

How do I fix this?

Could be that right-clicking is disabled by a javascript. Visit the page with javascript disabled in your browser and right-clicking should be possible. In case this doesn't work you can look in the sourcecode what is the HREF of the mp3 and link to it directly. Beware that you might be stealing this mp3.
Right-click disabling is mostly done to prevent inappropriate use of content. [2 77:H]

One of my students is the owner of the .mp3 file and the designer of the site. The link is just a plain link created in D.H.E., which I would expect to download the file, not play it... maybe there's a setting in the browser that says "play this type of file" rather than download it?

If I encounter this, I allways try it again with Opera.

Jan: I can't control which browser the user is going to use... I'm using Firefox, and it does the same thing with IE on my machine. How do I change the settings on my machine (and other users who might have this problem)?

I think that is a security setting in internet options

internet options>security>click internet>click custom level>scroll down to downloads and check>automatic prompting for file downloads..

Mine was unchecked so it did not prompt me[just openen in IE8] although i could rt click and save as but firefox did prompt me even with the box unchecked ---could be some extension I have in ff--there are so many--I forget what I got

you have no control over the end users secutity settings..upgrading to IE8 may change these settings --maybe...

rmmarsh,

the behavior of a click over a .mp3 file depends on the MIME settings of the browser;
The solution is to pack the .mp3 file to a .zip file and link that.
