Just wondering - I'm sure a bunch of you have had search engines on your sites. You know, the little "Search" page where there is a field and a "search" button. :P

How did you do that?

I know I can do something like that with Google's free gadgets, but I'm really not fond of their ads and would like something clean, IN my site.

Is there a free way to create a site search like that or are all the ad-free ones paid software? I'm thinking maybe someone's made a nice little open-source PHP code, but if there IS something like that I can't find it.

On a site I made I use a script called cSearch. You can see a demo here: http://www.verhoevenmilieu.nl/zoeken.htm
It can be downloaded here: ftp://terraserver.de/te/terraserver.de/
It's a small script that gives a good result on smaller sites. It searches for text in HTML files only. You don't need a database or to update your searchindex. It reads the site every time a visitor uses it. Also the possibility to skip certain folders or files.

Super Petran! Thanks. Exactly what I need, I'm going to install and test it and inform you about the result.
